Wumeng ( pronounced as woo-ming ) in Cantonese means no name or nameless.
But Wumeng Enterprise proprietor Dennie Chong sells famous names of Hollywood, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Bollywood artistes, in the form of imported movie posters.
Chong named his business as such because he could not think of a better name when he started his company 15 years ago.
He started out by selling comics and ventured into posters after collecting freebies that came with his stock.
“As a collector myself, collecting posters gives me lots of satisfaction, especially the limited edition ones.
“I started selling posters about five years ago and now I have steady stream of collectors who patronize my shop regularly.”
Chong travels to Taiwan & Hong Kong to find rare collectibles.
He said original limited edition posters came with a serial number and there were usually fewer than 20 copies worldwide.
“You can tell an original poster from a reprinted one by checking the back of the poster.
“Original posters are printed on both sides and are bigger by 10cm compared to reprinted ones that are printed only on one side.”
He said it was easy to spot serious collectors as they only purchased original versions and often look for classic movies such as Godfather, Jaws and James Bond.
The younger collectors go for Spiderman, Transformers, Superman and posters of other action-packed movies.
Original limited edition posters could fetch up to RM 200 per piece while you can get a reprint from as low as RM 6.
Chong operates his store on the third floor of Danga City Mall with his Taiwanese wife Ivy Pan. It is open daily between 11am – 9pm.
Beside posters, they also provide framing services. Chong said framing posters were not like framing normal pictures. Original posters should not be displayed in the glass frame.Instead, it should be laminated and framed without a case.
